Nieuw amsterdam7..

The refit took 18 months and cost more than her original construction, but on October 29, 1947, the Nieuw Amsterdam was finally back on the transatlantic run. Her passenger accommodations had been slightly altered, and the ship emerged with a gross tonnage some 400 tons larger than before, ending up at 36,667 tons.[4]

For the next twenty years Nieuw Amsterdam would enjoy a loyal following and financial success. Even when joined by a more contemporary fleet-mate in 1959, the SS Rotterdam, the Nieuw Amsterdam still commanded a loyal following and remained one of the most popular ships on the north Atlantic. Her several refits in the 1950s ensured she remained in top condition and continued service despite her being near thirty years of age. In 1967 severe boiler problems seemed to indicate an end to the venerable liner’s career, however new US Navy surplus boilers were installed during a 16 week shipyard period at Wilton Fijenoord in Schiedam and her career continued. more..

Chinese Kilo..

The PLAN in the 1990s sought to acquire a modern conventional submarine with emphasis on sensors, weaponry, and modern capabilities to engage enemy submarines in modern warfare. In 1994 it ordered two Kilo 877EKM type submarines from Russia, which were delivered by 1995. In 1996, two improved Kilo 636 submarines were ordered, delivered between 1997-1998. In 2002, a $2 billion deal was signed for eight more Kilo 636, these submarines particularly fitted with the capability of launching the Russian Novator 3M-54E Klub S cruise missile capable of engaging land and sea targets at 220 km. The Kilo class represents a huge leap forward in the PLAN submarine fleet. Originally a Soviet design in the 1980s, the Kilo was meant to be one of the world's quietest class of submarines. With 12 Kilos operational by 2006, it is unclear whether PLAN will buy more of these potent vessels. more..

Nuclear attack submarine force..

Nuclear submarines have been envisaged in the Chinese Navy since the 1950s. Despite ambition and a long history of development, the acquisition of nuclear submarines has been a difficult process. The Cultural Revolution greatly disrupted nuclear submarine development. The Sino-Soviet split prevented any Soviet assistance in nuclear propulsion, and these propulsion problems have been troublesome to this day.

The first Chinese nuclear powered submarine was laid down in 1967 but not completed until 1974. The Han class has experienced more than 20 years of development, the last of the class not being commissioned until 1990. Only five hulls have entered service and have been reported to have experienced nuclear reactor difficulties (though this has been greatly overcome in some aspects by French and subsequent Russian assistance).. more..

41 for Freedom

The “41 for Freedom” nuclear-powered submarines were armed with long-range submarine-launched ballistic missiles to create a deterrent force against the threat of nuclear war with the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

The United States Navy created a new hull classification symbol for this type of submarine, the SSBN. The first of the "41 for Freedom" submarines was the USS George Washington (SSBN-598) commissioned on 30 December 1959. The last submarine commissioned for the "41 for Freedom" submarines was the USS Will Rogers (SSBN-659) which was formally decommissioned and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 12 April 1993. Though she was the last built, Will Rogers was not the last FBM submarine decommissioned.

In July 1992, USS Kamehameha (SSBN-642) was converted to a SEAL special warfare platform and was outfitted with a drydeck shelter/swimmer delivery platform. USS Kamehameha was decommissioned on 2 April 2002, the last ship of the original "41 for Freedom" and the oldest submarine in the United States Navy. Almost 37 years old, she held the record for the longest service lifetime of any nuclear powered submarine..more..

Delta class submarine

The Delta class submarine (Project 667B) has formed the backbone of the Soviet and Russian strategic submarine fleet since its introduction in 1973. They carry nuclear ballistic missiles of the R-29 Vysota family, with the Delta I,II, III and IV carrying the R-29 (SS-N-8 'Sawfly'), R-29D (SS-N-8 'Sawfly'), R-29R (SS-N-18 'Stingray') and R-29RM (SS-N-23 'Skiff') respectively. The Delta I carried 12 missiles, the Delta II was a "stretched" Delta I that could carry 16 missiles; the Delta III and IV carry 16 missiles with multiple warheads and the submarines have improved electronics and noise reduction.

The R-27 Zyb missile carried by the Yankee class submarines of the late 1960s had a range of just 2,500–3,000 km (1,550–1,860 mi), so the earlier subs were forced to patrol close to the North American coast, whereas the Deltas could launch the >7,700 km (4,780 mi)-range R-29's from the relative safety of the Arctic Ocean. In turn the Deltas were superceded by the massive Typhoon class submarines. However the Deltas remained in service until the end of the Cold War with treaties such as START I. High running costs and the retirement of the Typhoons' R-39 (SS-N-20 'Sturgeon') missiles meant that some Delta III's were reactivated in the early 2000s to replace the Typhoons in Russian service.

As of July 2008, the Center for Arms Control Studies estimated the strength of the Russian strategic submarine fleet at one Typhoon class submarine (used to trial the R-30 Bulava missile), six Delta III and six Delta IV subs.[1] Of these two Delta III boats were decommissioning, with the rest expected to follow in the next few years.[1] They will ultimately be replaced by the new Borei class submarines, of which the first is undergoing sea trials without its missiles[1] and is not due to enter service until 2011. Four Delta IV boats have been overhauled in recent years, with work continuing on the other two.[1] The seventh Delta IV, K-64 Vladimir, has been converted for use by Special Forces.. more..

Type 092 submarine..

The 6,500-ton Type 092 Daqingyu (US Department of Defense designation Xia-class, Chinese designation 09-II) submarine was the first ballistic missile-carrying, nuclear-powered submarine class (SSBN) deployed by the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy, and the first SSBN designed and built in Asia. She was designed by Huang Xuhua (黄旭华), and derived from the Han-Class SSNs, with an extended hull to accommodate four missile tubes.
JL-1 and JL-2.

The first Changzheng 6 (# 406) of its class was laid down in 1978 at Huludao 120 miles North-East of Beijing; she was completed in 1981. She then spent 6 years being fitted out and conducting tests with its 12 JL-1 (CSS-N-3) missiles, becoming active in 1987. Later, the submarine went through numerous upgrades in incremental step, including using Type H/SQ2-262B sonar manufactured by No. 613 Factory replacing the original Type 604 sonar on board...more..

USS Michigan..

The Ohio class is a class of nuclear-powered submarines used by the United States Navy. The United States has 18 Ohio-class submarines:

The 14 Trident II SSBNs together carry around fifty percent of the total U.S. strategic warhead inventory. The exact number varies in an unpredictable and highly classified manner, at or below a maximum set by various strategic arms limitation treaties. Although the missiles have no pre-set targets when the submarine goes on patrol, the platform, when required, is capable of rapid targeting using secure and constant at-sea communications links. The Ohio class is the largest type of submarine ever constructed for the U.S. Navy, and are second only to the Russian Typhoon-class in displacement and size (the new Russian Borei class submarine has bigger displacement when submerged, but not when surfaced). more...

USS Alabama...

USS Alabama (SSBN-731) is the sixth Ohio-class nuclear-powered fleet ballistic missile submarine, and the sixth United States ship to be named after the state of Alabama. The ship's motto mimics the state's motto, Audemus Jura Nostra Defendere (We dare defend our rights).
Alabama was laid down on 14 October 1980 at Groton, Connecticut, by the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics and was launched on 19 May 1984; sponsored by Mrs. Barbara E. Dickinson, wife of William Louis Dickinson, Representative from Alabama; and commissioned at New London, on 25 May 1985. more...

HMS Vanguard

The tenth HMS Vanguard (S28) of the Royal Navy is the lead boat of her class of Trident ballistic missile-armed submarines. The sub is based at HMNB Clyde, Faslane.

Vanguard was built at Barrow-in-Furness by Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd (now BAE Systems Submarine Solutions), was launched on 4 March 1992, and commissioned on 14 August 1993.

The submarine's first captain was Captain David Russell.

In February 2002, Vanguard began a two-year refit at HMNB Devonport. The refit was completed in June 2004 and in October 2005, Vanguard completed her return to service trials (Demonstration and Shakedown Operations) with the firing of an unarmed Trident missile. During this refit, Vanguard was illegally boarded by a pair of anti-nuclear protestors.[1]

On 4 February 2009, Vanguard collided with the French submarine Triomphant in the Atlantic.[2][3][4] She was reportedly towed into Faslane in Scotland, under her own power arriving on 14 February 2009... more

submarine USS Alexandria..

The Los Angeles class, sometimes called the LA-class or the 688-class, is a class of nuclear-powered fast attack submarines (SSN) that forms the backbone of the United States submarine fleet. With 46 submarines, this class has more boats than any other nuclear powered submarine class in the world. The class was preceded by the Sturgeon class and followed by the Seawolf class and Virginia class. Submarines of this class are usually named after U.S. cities, breaking a long-standing Navy tradition of naming attack submarines after sea creatures.

The final 23 boats in the series, referred to as "688i" boats, are quieter than their predecessors and incorporate a more advanced combat system. These 688i boats are also designed for under-ice operations: their diving planes are on the bow rather than on the sail, and they have reinforced sails. more.....

Propulsion

Originally, submarines were human propelled. The first mechanically driven submarine was the 1863 French Plongeur, which used compressed air for propulsion. Anaerobic propulsion was first employed by the Spanish Ictineo II in 1864. Ictineo's engine used a peroxide compound to generate heat for steam propulsion, while also providing oxygen for the crew. The system was not employed again until 1940 when the German Navy tested a hydrogen peroxide-based system employing the same principles, the Walter turbine, on the experimental V-80 submarine and later on the naval U-791 and type XVII submarines.[6]

Until the advent of nuclear marine propulsion, most 20th century submarines used batteries for running underwater and gasoline (petrol) or diesel engines on the surface, and for battery recharging. Early submarines used gasoline, but this quickly gave way to kerosene (paraffin), then diesel, because of reduced flammability. Diesel-electric became the standard means of propulsion. The diesel or gasoline engine and the electric motor, separated by clutches, were initially on the same shaft driving the propeller. See More
